Are you ready for the digital switch?

Chances are that if you are reading this, you are ready for the digital TV revolution and have had nothing to worry about. But it looks like those who aren't ready have more time.

5.7% of American homes were not ready to switch to digital, so Congress decided to delay the changeover for four more months. I personally think that four months from now that percentage might drop to 5%, or perhaps 4.5%, but not enough to justify the extension. How long have we been hearing about the digital changeover? At least 18 months, if not longer, if I remember correctly.

It's not that I care about the changeover. I've been on digital cable for years now. But I can't ignore that time was wasted in Congress debating delaying the changeover, and voting on an extension, instead of doing other things like, oh I don't know, maybe working through some of the bigger economic issues we're facing. People have had enough time to prepare. 5.7% seems like a reasonable percentage to say "sorry, we gave you plenty of warning" to.

TV is not a right. It's a privilege and a luxury. Yes, it's become a staple, but it's not a requirement. So 5.7% of homes find their signals don't work. So they then do something about it. I don't see why this extension was even entertained, but what do I care? It doesn't affect me directly. I guess I'm just tired of seeing time in government wasted on petty things.
